The walk down the new path has begun. Dave was admitted to the hospital this week to begin his chemotherapy and radiation. He checked in and got settled in for his overnight visit. They started what they call a pre hydration about 10:30 (sodium chloride drip), then about 1:30 they administered the nausea meds and then the Sisplatin (chemo meds). This only took about an hour or so. After this was done they did a post hydration drip. The Sisplatin is a very toxic chemo med and can do damage to the kidneys if not hydrated well. He had his first radiation treatment shortly after the chemo. He took a shot of adavan before he went to radiation. He did well there. He had his second radiation on Friday before he came home. He did not take any meds. before this treatment. He did well without the adavan, and says he should not need it again during the rest of the radiation treatments. Dave did say the food was pretty good, I would have to agree as I made a trip to the cafeteria myself.
We returned home Friday afternoon to quiet, we watched a movie before the kids came in from school. After the kids did their chores and packed a weekend bag, I took them to their grandparents till Sunday. Dave and I are both glad they are not here as he has been very ill. The nausea meds. the doc. sent him home with were not working very well for him. I called the doc. and asked for them to prescribe something else and explained that he is not wanting to eat or drink. The doc. prescribed another med. which seems to have helped. I did get him to eat a piece of toast and drink a 12 oz Gatorade as well as some water and sprite. He is sleeping on and off and feels terrible. I pulled the muscles in my lower back on Thurs. so I have been trying to take care of me and him. He knows I hurt my back and does ask if I am OK. I am feeling much better today (ice/heat and Advil).
Dave will be returning in about 21 days for his second chemo treatment and overnight stay. He now has 33 radiation treatments and 2 chemo. treatments left. Thank you for listening and God bless you. We love you all.

Hi Clara, this is your cousin Timmie Joe, this is just in case his Dotor didn't tell either of you about how the treatments will make it to where Dave won't have the taste for food, the reason's why, is because it'll have a real shittie taste to him, and most of the time NO TASTE at ALL. All you can really do is make what ever you cook with tons of seasoning, and give him alot of Ice-Cream of what ever the dude likes the most. And as far as getting sick, ya better get use to that, and keep alot of Antacid Tabs around, as well as Pepto-Bismol around too, and don't take this the wrong way, make sure he has alot of SEX when he feels up to it, it might sound crazy, but it'll help to take his mind off of the feeling of being sick sick sick all the time, this is no joke Clara...
Again about the not having any taste for eating any kind of food, try to find a thing or two of what he can taste, then as much as it might seem rough & sometimes a headache to do at sometimes, cook for him what he can eat, and at the same time, cook what you and the kids have to eat as well, you'll have to start planing dinners well ahead of time to have a dinner that he can eat, and at the same time, something that you & the kids will enjoy as well.
And know this, heavy foods are the wrong things to be feeding the dude for awhile, light & soft foods is the way to go at first, oh, it'll maybe take Dave up to even a Year after Chemo an all, for the food to start tasting right to him again, it's a long rough road to travel, but you & him will make it thru this, have faith, and you'll receive it from up above.
Oh Yeah, Dave will more or less end up changing Med's over & over & over again, plus he might have to take some Pills for up to 5 Years After The Treatment as well, it's kind of like still having Chemo, but takin' in Pill Form.
Clara, this is Linda now. The best I can tell you as far as food goes, let him have what he feels like. Cold and cooler foods work the best. Like Tim said ice cream. That's about what I lived off of.
Food basically will all taste like metal. Lemon hard candy will take that taste out of his mouth when he's not eating. Make sure he doesn't eat raw vegetables or fruits especially when his blood counts drop off. He will be very prone to infection. Oh and beef is the hardest to digest. That's really what you have to give him things that are easily digestable.
I wish you both all the best. If you have and questions e-mail and I'll try to help you out. Beleive me I've been there and might have had the same problems at the time.
